You can use this to the fullest by setting its &#8220;Require Password&#8221; feature to &#8220;Immediately.&#8221; This will instantly log out your Mac user account no matter how short of a time you haven&#8217;t been using it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-require-password-immediately-edited.png\" alt=\"10-macos-security-features\" class=\"wp-image-4072\" width=\"465\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-require-password-immediately-edited.png 1098w, https:\/\/gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-require-password-immediately-edited-293x250.png 293w, https:\/\/gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-require-password-immediately-edited-1024x875.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 465px) 100vw, 465px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p> Say you doze off while working in a cafe; this feature will prevent the person beside you from taking advantage of the information on your screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though instant auto-lock can be pretty annoying at first, this will be helpful for when you need to step away from your Mac in public or (we hope not) if your mac gets lost or stolen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to set up Auto-Lock:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Click on the<strong>&nbsp;Apple menu logo.<\/strong><\/li><li>Go to <strong>System Preferences<\/strong> and under it to&nbsp;<strong>Security &amp; Privacy<\/strong>.<\/li><li>In the <strong>General <\/strong>tab, click on&nbsp;<strong>Require Password<\/strong>&nbsp;and set it to<strong>&nbsp;Immediately.<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_FileVault_Encryption\"><\/span><strong>2. FileVault<\/strong> Encryption<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>FileVault is one of the most integral macOS security features, especially if your MacBook falls into the wrong hands. Setting up FileVault will encrypt your hard drive, making it inaccessible to anyone who doesn&#8217;t have a unique decryption key.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means even if someone bypasses your admin account password, they won&#8217;t be able to see any of your important files. FileVault will also delete the decryption key from memory after some time, making it impossible for anyone to access your data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-filevault-macos-security-features-edited-1.webp\" alt=\"mac-filevault-macos-security-features\" class=\"wp-image-4007\" width=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-filevault-macos-security-features-edited-1.webp 836w, https:\/\/gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-filevault-macos-security-features-edited-1-300x244.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 836px) 100vw, 836px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To set up FileVault, follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Click on the&nbsp;<strong>Apple menu logo.<\/strong><\/li><li>Go to&nbsp;<strong>System Preferences&nbsp;<\/strong>and under it to <strong>Security &amp; Privacy<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Click on&nbsp;the <strong>File Vault&nbsp;<\/strong>tab and press &#8220;<strong>Turn on FileVault<\/strong>&#8220;<\/li><li>You will then be prompted to create a decryption key. <\/li><li>We also recommend encrypting external drives connected to your Mac with Filevault. This can be done by clicking &#8220;<strong>Turn On FileVault&#8221;&nbsp;<\/strong>when connecting to an external drive.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Firmware_Password\"><\/span><strong>3. Firmware Password<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For an extra secure mac, setting up a firmware password gives an extra layer of protection from tech-savy hackers. It will require a password whenever you start up your Mac in an unusual way like booting it from a different device, in the recovery partition, or using a startup key combination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple Silicon Macs, however, no longer require a firmware password because of its upgraded FileVault feature. The following steps on how to set a Firmware password on Macs, therefore, <strong>only apply to macs with Intel chips <\/strong>(which still makes up the majority of macs in operation):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to set a firmware password on an Intel Mac:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-firmware-password-utility-1024x436.png\" alt=\"mac-firmware-password-utility\" class=\"wp-image-3987\" width=\"559\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-firmware-password-utility-1024x436.png 1024w, https:\/\/gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-firmware-password-utility-300x128.png 300w, https:\/\/gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-firmware-password-utility.png 1288w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 559px) 100vw, 559px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Turn off Mac<\/li><li>Boot to recovery partition by holding&nbsp;<strong>Cmd + R<\/strong>&nbsp;during startup<\/li><li>Go to the&nbsp;<strong>Utilities<\/strong>&nbsp;menu<\/li><li>Choose&nbsp;<strong>Startup Security Utility<\/strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<strong>Firmware Password Utility<\/strong><\/li><li>Click <strong>Turn on Firmware Password <\/strong>in the pop-up<\/li><li><strong>Enter a strong password you&#8217;ll remember.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Restart<\/strong>&nbsp;your Mac from&nbsp;<strong>the Apple<\/strong>&nbsp;menu.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to follow step 5 because your Firmware password (unlike your admin account password) will not be easy to reset. If you forget it, you will need to bring your Mac along with a proof of purchase to the Apple store to have it reset. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Mac_Firewall\"><\/span><strong>4. Mac Firewall<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p> A firewall&nbsp;is your first line of defense against attackers or external threats getting access to your system. Enabling your mac&#8217;s firewall is sometimes seen as unnecessary since most internet routers already have a firewall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having it turned off also makes it easier to set up connections with other Apple devices. Then again, enabling your Mac&#8217;s firewall is still highly recommended if you join public networks frequently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To enable your firewall, follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Go to&nbsp;<strong>System Preferences<\/strong>&nbsp;and then&nbsp;<strong>Security &amp; Privacy<\/strong>&nbsp;pane.<\/li><li>Click the&nbsp;<strong>Firewall&nbsp;<\/strong>tab.<\/li><li>Click the lock icon to unlock it, then enter an administrator name and password when prompted (the same password you use to log in to your Mac).<\/li><li>Click&nbsp;<strong>Turn On Firewall<\/strong><\/li><li>Customize preferences by clicking <strong>Firewall Options<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li><li>To make it more difficult for hackers to find your Mac, you can also enable &#8220;<strong>Stealth Mode.<\/strong>&#8221; This will prevent your Mac from responding to port scans and connection attempts from unknown sources.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_XProtect_Virus_Scanner\"><\/span>5. <strong>XProtect Virus Scanner<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In case you didn&#8217;t know, mac&#8217;s built-in antivirus software is called XProtect. It works by scanning apps when they are first launched or updated and stops malware from running if detected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-xprotect-antimalware.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3989\" width=\"343\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-xprotect-antimalware.jpg 960w, https:\/\/gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-xprotect-antimalware-300x207.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is that XProtect needs no user configuration and automatically runs in the background to keep you protected to the best of its capabilities. Just make sure you&#8217;re keeping your OS updated, and you&#8217;ll be fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the flip side, XProtect still has vulnerabilities. One of it, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.macworld.co.uk\/feature\/can-macs-get-viruses-3454926\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MacWorld<\/a>, is that it doesn&#8217;t look for as many strains of malware as dedicated mac antivirus software. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, Apple&#8217;s Head of software, Craig Federighi, even admitted that &#8220;the level of Mac malware is unacceptable&#8221; as the number of reported Mac infections surpassed that of Windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, while XProtect does protect against malware, it&#8217;s important to know that it&#8217;s not as comprehensive as third-party mac anti-malware software out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> We recommend researching which one will best suit your needs as well as going for AV software that won&#8217;t slow down your Mac as a tradeoff between speed and protection is common.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_App_Sandboxing_and_Gatekeeper\"><\/span>6. <strong>App Sandboxing and Gatekeeper<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In line with Xprotect, macOS security features also include other helpful security software such as App sandboxing and Gatekeeper. Both apps are part of macOS&#8217; System Integrity Protection (SIP) and they go hand-in-hand in protecting macs from unauthorized codes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Though App Sandboxing doesn&#8217;t strictly guard against malware, it does limit what the malware can do. App sandboxing restricts apps from accessing critical folders or files on your Mac that unknown sources, including malware, could damage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whereas, Gatekeeper protects from malicious apps by preventing mac users from installing apps from unauthorized developers. However, remembering many passwords can be difficult, especially if they are different for each account. This is where the Keychain Access app comes in handy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keychain Access app stores all of your passwords and allows you to access them whenever you need them. It also keeps track of when your passwords expire, so you can always stay up-to-date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keychain Acess is highly secure and uses state-of-the-art encryption techniques to protect your passwords. The keychain file is encrypted with a unique key for every device.
