That said, having a lot of files and folders on your desktop can also slow down your Mac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the less desktop clutter, the faster your Mac can be. To delete an icon, hold down the&nbsp;<strong>Command key<\/strong>&nbsp;while clicking on the desktop file. To do this, drag one item on top of another. The second desktop icon will then be added to the first as a stack. To disable a slideshow screensaver on macOS, open&nbsp;<strong>System Preferences,&nbsp;<\/strong>click&nbsp;&#8220;<strong>Desktop &amp; Screen Saver&#8221;,&nbsp;<\/strong>then click <strong>Screen Saver <\/strong>and<strong> <\/strong>customize options from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Clear_Big_Junk_Files\"><\/span><strong>6. Clear Big Junk Files<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How much free space do you have? Having only 10% free storage space left or close to that could be the reason your Mac is slowing down. But we&#8217;ve already talked about the many ways you can declutter your system in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gizmogrind.com\/blog\/mac-maintenance-2022\/\">mac maintenance guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There we covered more complex processes like resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) and PRAM, which are great for flushing out cache files. So, now we&#8217;ll teach you the most efficient way to get rid of junk files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You want to delete large and unused apps and files right off the bat. Below is how you can target those files:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-finder-date-modified-1024x629.png\" alt=\"mac-finder-sort-by-date\" class=\"wp-image-3955\" width=\"577\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-finder-date-modified-1024x629.png 1024w, https:\/\/gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-finder-date-modified-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-finder-date-modified.png 1066w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 577px) 100vw, 577px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Open a new<strong>&nbsp;Finder<\/strong>&nbsp;window and press&nbsp;<strong>Command + J.<\/strong>&nbsp;This will open the &#8220;Kind&#8221; bar where you can toggle between &#8220;<strong>Size,&#8221; <\/strong>&#8220;<strong>Date Modified,&#8221; &#8220;Name,&#8221;<\/strong> and other criteria.<\/li><li>Arrange it by&nbsp;<strong>&#8220;Date Modified&#8221;&nbsp;<\/strong>to see your oldest files, most of which you would probably have no trouble deleting.<\/li><li>After deleting outdated files, you can now move on and toggle<strong>&nbsp;&#8220;Size&#8221;&nbsp;<\/strong>next.<\/li><li>Carefully deliberate if the large files on your system are still either useful or important.<\/li><li>You can then delete these files or transfer them to an external hard drive. Keep in mind files that are more than 100 MB are generally considered large.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Sort_Out_iCloud_Syncing\"><\/span>7. <strong>Sort Out iCloud Syncing<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another suspect for hogging up resources and slowing down your Mac is iCloud syncing. If you use iCloud to sync files across multiple desktops, you may be suffering slowdowns while your system syncs in the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>File minimalism is yet again necessary here. To speed up your Mac, consider only storing the documents you need quick access to on your iCloud desktop. This will reduce unnecessary syncing processes that are bogging down your system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-icloud-optimize-mac-storage.png\" alt=\"mac-icloud-sync-optimize-mac-storage\" class=\"wp-image-3958\" width=\"352\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-icloud-optimize-mac-storage.png 460w, https:\/\/gizmogrind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mac-icloud-optimize-mac-storage-207x250.png 207w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 352px) 100vw, 352px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>So here&#8217;s how you can sort out iCloud syncing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Check your iCloud settings.<\/li><li>Open&nbsp;<strong>System Preferences<\/strong>&nbsp;and then <strong>Apple ID<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Uncheck certain apps in this pane to stop syncing with iCloud. Consider offloading iCloud Drive and iCloud Photos since many large documents are usually stored here.<\/li><li>From here, avoid opening iCloud Photos in the first place if not necessary. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You also want to uncheck the &#8220;<strong>Optimise Mac Storage&#8221;<\/strong> box to make Mac faster. This will completely stop offloading your files to the cloud and store the iCloud Drive contents locally on your Drive until you enable it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>iCloud syncing will help you free up space, but if you&#8217;re dying to speed up your Mac, you want to disable as many unnecessary backgrounds syncing as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re not using iCloud Drive or wish to deactivate it completely, head over to&nbsp;<strong>System Preferences<\/strong>&nbsp;and select&nbsp;<strong>iCloud<\/strong>.
